Christians from countries that are safely pro-life at the moment cannot presume they will stay that way, according to pro-life campaigner Dr. Calum Miller.

The apologist and research fellow in bioethics at the University of Oxford, has delivered a sobering assessment of the enormous strides made by the abortion movement globally, in the last few decades.

In an address to the World Evangelical Alliance (WEA) general assembly in Seoul this week, he warned that even in socially conservative countries, or majority Christian nations, attitudes are rapidly changing.

One example of this is the Philippines, where research on young people that he was involved in last year, found that 70% of the mostly Catholic nation supported legalising abortion.

27 NATIONS LIBERALISED ABORTION LAWS IN 11 YEARS

Dr Miller told the Evangelical leaders that in the 11 years between the WEA’s 2008 general assembly in Thailand and its global gathering in Indonesia in 2019, 27 countries had liberalised their abortion laws.

One of them was Ireland, where, in 2013, only a third of the population said they supported abortion.

Just five years later, two-thirds of the population voted to legalise it, including 85% of young people.

“This rapid generational shift is coming for the Global South as well,” he warned with the liberalisation spreading at a “frightening pace in every region across the world.”

“MILLIONS OF DOLLARS BEING SPENT ON PRESSURING POLITICIANS TO PROMOTE ABORTION”

“You might think that your country is a strongly conservative, Christian country, but the likely reality is that millions of dollars are pouring into your country to pressure your legislators and your young people to promote abortion,” Dr. Miller asserted.

He listed culturally conservative countries under active pressure to loosen their abortion laws as including Nigeria, Poland, Chile, Brazil, Kenya, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Liberia, Dominica, Haiti and the WEA assembly’s host country South Korea.

“Right here in Korea, there is a push in the National Assembly to legalise abortion all the way up until birth in the nation with the lowest fertility rate on the planet.

“HIGH ABORTION RATES AND LOW BIRTH RATES WILL DESTROY MOST NATIONS”

Dr. MIller stressed said that the global spread of abortion laws threatens the long-term future of nations already facing declining birth rates.

“Whether you live in the most liberal or the most conservative country in the world, this is something that will destroy the future of all of our countries,” he said.

“Outside of Africa and the Pacific Islands, almost no countries will have enough children even to survive.”

“ONE IN THREE BRITISH PREGNANCIES ARE ABORTED”

Dr. Miller lamented that in his own country, the UK, “one in three pregnancies end in abortion.”

“That means there are many people in our churches personally affected.”

He reminded church leaders that the issue must not be treated as secondary among the Church’s many social concerns.

“There are so many issues that church leaders are burdened with, and it is easy to make abortion just another issue.”

“But this is not just another issue.”

“50 MILLION ABORTIONS GLOBALLY EVERY YEAR”

He urged churches around the world to “choose life” and to respond with both truth and compassion to what he called “by far the largest cause of death globally.”

Dr. Miller estimated that “there are maybe 50 million abortions around the world every year and a hundred million parents carrying that loss for the rest of their lives.”

The World Health Organization has put that figure as high as 73 million terminations per year.

It estimates there are just over 60 million annual deaths in total — not counting abortions.

The bioethics expert noted these huge numbers of abortion deaths “are not caused by disease or by accident, but by our own hands.”

DOCTOR REFERENCED SCRIPTURE TO UNDERLINE THE SPIRITUAL WEIGHT OF THE ISSUE

He showed the evangelical delegates a video of an unborn child at nine weeks of gestation.

“This is not a clump of cells or a parasite. It is a child made in God’s image,” Dr. Miller told them.

He referenced Scripture to underline the spiritual and moral weight of the issue.

“Jesus tells us that when we ignore those most in need of help, we ignore Him and put ourselves at risk of eternal fire.”

Quoting Jesus’s words, he added: Let the children come to Me and do not hinder them.

WHY CHURCHES MUST ADVOCATE BOLDLY AGAINST ABORTION

Dr. Miller said that churches must “advocate boldly, firmly, and graciously and compassionately against abortion,” warning that failure to do so, would undermine their moral witness. “

“Unless we are able and willing to do that, I do not think we will convince Jesus that we really care about children.”

“Scripture tells us that children are a blessing, that we must be fruitful and multiply.”

“It tells us that life and death are set before us and we must choose life.”

“It says Jesus came to give life in abundance.”
