Polish families with two or more children will now pay zero income tax up to a certain threshold, under the pro-family policies of new Christian President Karol Nawrocki.
The move cements his pledge to return Christian values to the heart of national life, and mirrors similar pro-family policies in Hungary.
Families earning up to A$60,000 a year won’t have to pay any income tax, saving them around A$400 a month.
The tax exemption applies to all individuals with parental responsibilities, including legal guardians and foster parents.
AIM OF THE TAX BREAK FOR FAMILIES
The reform is designed to support families, raise household incomes, and stimulate economic activity.
The real impact of the reform will become apparent in the 2026 tax return, to be filed in 2027.
The main goals are to ease the tax burden on families, increase disposable income, stimulate consumption, and encourage labour market participation.
ZERO PERSONAL INCOME TAX WAS A PILLAR OF PRESIDENT’S ELECTION CAMPAIGN
President Nawrocki made the zero personal income tax (PIT) measure one of the key pillars of his election campaign.
In March, he presented his “Contract with the Poles,” in which he pledged to implement the tax relief from the very first day of his presidency.
Following his victory in the June run-off election, he kept his promise, symbolically signing the bill on August 8th before submitting it to the Polish parliament, the Sejm.
He signed it into law last week.
FAMILY TAX BREAK PART OF NATIONAL ‘TAX ARMOUR’ REFORM
Zero PIT is part of a broader reform known as the “tax armour,” a package that also includes lowering value-added-tax (VAT) from 23% to 22%, abolishing capital gains tax, and introducing a quota-based pension indexation system.
Around 76% of poll respondents said the new tax law was definitely needed, while only 16% expressed strong opposition to the president’s proposal.
Additionally, 66% of participants positively assessed the economic and financial impact analysis presented with the zero PIT reform for 2+2 families.
Just 11% disagreed with it.
WHO IS THE NEW POLISH PRESIDENT?
Karol Nawrocki was elected Poland’s new president in June after narrowly defeating Warsaw’s liberal mayor, Rafal Trzaskowski, in a tightly contested run-off.
The 42-year-old conservative historian is a former head of the Institute of National Remembrance, a state institution dedicated to investigating and prosecuting crimes committed by Nazi and Communist regimes against the Polish nation.
He emphasised nationalist themes, traditional Catholic values, and a “Poland First” mantra during his campaign.
PRESIDENT NAWROCKI’S ELECTION PLATFORM
His platform focused on sovereignty, opposing perceived EU overreach, particularly on judicial reforms and migration policies.
A political newcomer with no prior elected office, Mr. Nawrocki was endorsed by the nationalist conservative Law and Justice Party in November 2024.
Polls indicated he also garnered support from a majority of voters who backed Slawomir Mentzen, the nationalist candidate who placed third in the first round of the presidential election in May.
In addition to European populist conservatives, such as Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and Romanian George Simion, who narrowly lost his country’s presidential run-off on May 18, Mr. Nawrocki received support from US conservatives, including President Donald Trump, who hosted him at The White House.
